On November 3, 2017, Apple released their latest smart phone, the iPhone X, just a few weeks before Turkey Day. To us it’s Thanksgiving, but to marketers working at Apple it means… yes, you guessed right, Black Friday. On this greatest day of the year, Black Friday, oops… I meant to say Thanksgiving, right around the corner, not only will we see turkeys, but we will also see smart phone deals flying around all over the place.
So before you get bombarded by a bunch of advertisements boasting great deals and prices, I did some research of my own in the effort to help you find the best phone for you to ring in the New Year with. If you think about it, this is quite a big deal. Make a smart decision here with your smart phone purchase.
In my last article, I wrote about how to quick charge your smartphone, which in my opinion is one of the key factors that most of us neglect when we are shopping for a smart phone. For myself, I made the mistake last year when I decided to buy a new phone. If I knew the iPhone 6’s battery would only last me about 6 hours each day, I wouldn’t have made that purchase.
Now here are the areas in which I base my recommendations on:
- Battery Life (especially important for me)
- Quality of Build
- Screen Display and Resolution
Without further ado, let’s look at the 5 smart phones worth mentioning in 2017:
- iPhone X, is it the new best thing?
With the beautiful glass made giant OLED screen, Apple removed its decade-long signature phone button and added the finger print + facial feature scanner to unlock this phone.
The iPhone X has a great 12 mega pixel dual lens camera with optical stabilization and 4K video at 60 frames per second, making it a great camera. The A11 Bionic Processor is also what supports iPhone X’s top notch performance, making the user experience very smooth.
Although the iPhone X has a beautiful OLED display at 2436 x 1125 resolution, its battery life is at a low 2716 mAh. If you keep it at full brightness, it only lasts about 4 hours while streaming videos. However, with moderate use, the battery should be able to last you for a day.
Another down side of the iPhone X is that it still doesn’t come with a headphone jack, but it does support Quick Charge on USB-Type C cables. While the iPhone X doesn’t have the longest battery life, pairing it with a smart outlet that supports Quick Charge, the iPhone X could charge up to 50% in 30 minutes. That’s a pretty quick charge! This year’s best Black Friday deal for the iPhone X is probably at Walmart. There, if you purchase an iPhone X you could get a $300 gift card. - OnePlus5 with a faster processor.
Chinese manufacturer OnePlus5 came out with an all-aluminum premium smart phone. This phone is known for its fast processing speed. Specialized options include 6 GB RAM phone with 64 GB storage, and 8 GB RAM with 128 GB storage. The OnePlus5 uses Snapdragon835, one of the fastest process speeds Qualcomm has available.
The screen display is at 1080 x 1920, not the best resolution, and battery at 3300mAh, which means the OnePlus5 can still last you a whole day of moderate use and you’d still have about 20% battery life left at the end of the day.
The camera has a dual lens with 16 & 20 megapixels; however it does not come with optical stabilization, meaning it does not do well when taking pictures in low light areas.
The OnePlus5 is not water resistant and if you are in the US, this smart phone won’t work with carriers such as Verizon or Sprint. All in all, I give this phone about 7.9 out of 10.
For the OnePlus5, your chances of getting this phone on Black Friday in a retail store are slim. Best way to get this smart phone on discount is to go on Amazon and shop during cyber Monday.
- Google Pixel 2, go ahead, ask Google anything.
Pushing AI(Artificial Intelligence) to the max, the Google Pixel 2 comes with great features. The phone will record and tell you any song and artist’s name at any given time. Also by going to its 12 mega pixel f/1.8 aperture Optical stabilization support camera, you can click on any item within the frame and google will tell you what it is. And don’t worry about lag time because Google’s got you covered with the fastest Qualcomm processor available, the Snapdragon835.
On top of everything, the Google Pixel has a battery life of 3520 mAh and supports Quick Charge. With the USB Type-C 3.1 port you can get up to 7 hours of battery on a short 15 minutes of charging. After all, the Google Pixel is a really well rounded, great performing, top of the line smart phone.

The current best deal for the Google Pixel 2 XL is at the Verizon Store, where you can buy one and get the second one Half OFF! Or purchase one and get a $200 gift card. Visit the link and check out price: https://www.verizonwireless.com/smartphones/google/
- LG G6, is it as fly as a G6?
The 2017 LG G6 is a simple, reliable smart phone. With great LCD screen resolution at 2880 x 1440, this phone offers a great clear display on LCD. The camera is at 13 megapixels, f1.8 aperture with Optical Stabilization that takes great images. The processor uses Snapdragon821, which is not the fastest processor on the market right now, but you won’t feel that much of a difference when in use.
The battery life on the LG G6 is at 3300 mAh, which is pretty decent, and can support you through an entire day of heavy use and leave you about 20% battery life at the end of the day. Decent, but not too impressive. This smart phone also supports Quick Charge, and remember, when pairing your cable with a fast charging smart outlet it can make charging that much faster.
Overall, I would say LG has done a great job on its new 2017 phone, and could probably say that this phone does fly like a G6.
The best LG G6 Black Friday deals is at T-Mobile, where you can buy an LG smartphone and get another for free. Check out the promotion at the following link: https://www.t-mobile.com/offers/lg-phone-deals?icid=WMD_TMNG_Q417HOLLG_9HBKRSYDBAB11089
- Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the smart phone of 2017?
The Galaxy Note 8 was released on September 3, 2017. The Dual 12 MP f 1.7 & f2.4 aperture camera shoots pictures at top quality with 4 K video and up to 9MP image recording. The screen displays a gorgeous 6.3 inches AMOLED at 2960 x 1440 edge to edge resolution, giving you a great top tier quality screen.
The Note 8 uses the fastest processor Qualcomm currently has, the Snapdragon 835, which creates a nice, fast and smooth user experience. The Note 8 has a battery life of 3300 mAh. The reason why the battery life is not as great as the S8 is probably because of the space needed for the built-in stylus pen.
Even with an AMOLED screen that drains loads of energy, the battery can still give you a good day of heavy use and still leave about 20% of remaining battery life at the end of the day.
For how to charge your Note 8 at top speeds, you can check out another article by our E-Commerce Specialist Tony, “The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is out and it charges a lot faster than you think.”
For your best deal on Black Friday, your best bet is probably to purchase the Note 8 at T-Mobile or Sprint, which are both offering 15% off early bird deals. Rumor also says Best buy is cutting their prices by 20% off for Black Friday. Or be patient and wait for cyber Monday for the best deal. In final thought, personally I think the best smart phone of 2017 must be the Google Pixel 2. After all, the AI google assistant function, 12 mp f/1.8 camera, snapdragon 835 processor, and the 3520 mAh battery with the ability to Quick Charge to 7 hours in 15 minutes on a Smart Outlet are outstanding pluses. Black Friday is right around the corner and deals are hotter than ever before. Comment below and let us know which phone you think deserves the title of the Best Smart Phone of 2017.
